Health and Fitness for Children — December 8, 2016

Health and Fitness for Children

Amongst many of the subjects we introduce and teach in homeschool, ‘Health and Fitness’ is an important subject which provides opportunity to build both physical confidence as well as healthy eating habits. This also enables children to build good character; children can learn discipline, respect, leadership and fairness to name a few.

Health can be understood in many ways, from the health or the body, heart and soul. The purpose of this post is to dicuss about the health and fitness of the body.

When introducing the health of the body, it is important to consider teaching healthy eating habits as well as what different foods can do to the body (short-term and long-term) etc. Learning about it is essential and implementing it ourselves is proven to be the most effective and quickest way to teach children generally. Children learn by example and they eat what we eat. So, whether you’re eating healthy or not, chances are that they are already following in your footsteps.

When introducing physcial activity, it’s also important that we allow our children to engage in a variety of activities daily for a sufficient amount of time. This can be done individually, in pairs or in groups.

Below are a few reading books that I personally recommend adding to your homeschool collection if you are able. Please share with us your collection in the comments below and check back as we may add to this collection over time inshaAllah. Also be warned of picture making within the books. ‘Allah Gave Me…’ (5 Senses Series)

A few reminders to myself first and foremost:

The Prophet said:

“Mention Allah’s Name (say ‘Bismillah’ before starting eating), eat with your right hand, and eat from what is near you.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

“Do not eat with your left (hand), Shaytan eats with his left (hand). (Bukhari)

“Do not drink in one gulp like a camel, but in two or three (gulps). Mention the Name of Allah (say Bismillah) when you start drinking and praise Him (say Al- hamdu lillah) after you have finished (drinking).” (At-Tirmidhi)

“The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls, to keep him going. If he must do that (fill his stomach), then let him fill one third with food, one third with drink and one third with air.” (At-Tirmidhi)

“Everything besides remembrance of Allah is wasteful play except four: a man playing with his wife, a man training his horse, a man walking between targets (to learn archery) and a man learning to swim.” [Reported by Imaam Nasaa’ee and declared authentic by Imaam Albaanee. Saheeh Al-Jaami 4534]
